Warner Bros. released the beta version of the game “MultiVersus” last week. It is a crossover fighting game that features some of the studio’s popular fictional characters.
The cartoon version of Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James from “Space Jam: A New Legacy” is one of the playable characters in the game.
EVO 2022, which is currently taking place in Las Vegas, is set to play host to a $100,000 tournament of the game. However, some of the game’s characters won’t be available to use in the tournament.
“Iron Giant, LeBron James or any other characters released after the start of Open Beta will not be allowed in the Evo 2022 ‘MultiVersus’ Open Beta Tournament,” reads the tournament rules page. “This is subject to change at the sole discretion of Warner Bros. and [‘MultiVersus’ developer] Player First Games.”
James himself reportedly did not respond to a request for a comment from the Washington Post. It seems like some people want James to show up at the tournament in order to cause a pretty funny scene.
It seems a bit unlikely that James will end up showing up at the tournament. He’s been a bit busy recently getting ready for the 2022-23 NBA regular season.
The 18-time All-Star and the Lakers endured a pretty rough 2021-22 season, as the Lakers went 33-49 and didn’t even clinch a spot in the league’s play-in tournament. James had a fantastic personal year, recording 30.3 points, 8.2 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game.
James also got a little closer to passing Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. The four-time league MVP will likely pass Abdul-Jabbar on the list sometime during the upcoming season.
The Lakers have made a couple of changes to their roster this offseason in hopes of becoming title contenders once again. More changes might be on the horizon, as the team is at the center of many trade rumors.
