Luka Doncic’s immediate reaction to stunning Lakers sale revealed

Luka Doncic had a blunt response when he learned that the Los Angeles Lakers were changing hands again in August.

Ramona Shelburne detailed Doncic’s private exchange with his manager, Lara Beth Seager, after Mark Walter agreed to sell his Lakers interest to Bob Iger and Josh Kushner.

“There’s not much that can shock me anymore,” Doncic told Seager.

Seager had alerted Doncic in Slovenia after receiving a late-night tip in Dallas. The account describes his reaction to the August agreement, rather than a comment made this week.

His public response came separately. In an Aug. 12 post on X, Doncic emphasized his commitment to the Lakers and his championship ambitions.

“Being a Laker means everything to me,” Doncic wrote.

He also expressed confidence in the franchise’s potential despite the changes around him. That public message emphasized his plans in Los Angeles; the newly reported conversation provides a glimpse of his immediate response behind the scenes.

Jeanie Buss had reassured Luka Doncic about Lakers leadership

Shelburne also reported that Jeanie Buss showed Doncic’s camp paperwork assuring her continued authority over basketball decisions. His manager confirmed that reassurance, a detail that helps explain the personal significance of another ownership transition.

The earlier arrangement was publicly documented. When the NBA approved Walter’s purchase on Oct. 30, 2025, it said Buss would remain governor for at least five years after the transaction closed.

The league also said the Buss family would retain an ownership interest.

“I also want to thank and congratulate Jeanie Buss and the Buss family for 46 years of transformational leadership and service,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said then. “While this historic transaction transfers the Buss family’s majority interest in the Lakers, I am thrilled that Jeanie will remain the team’s Governor and an active and engaged member of our league.”

That announcement presented continuity in leadership alongside a change in majority ownership. The paperwork described in Tuesday’s report shows how that same continuity was communicated to Doncic’s camp.

Doncic’s commitment preceded the latest sale agreement

Doncic had already made a substantial commitment to Los Angeles. In August 2025, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported his three-year, $165 million maximum extension, citing agent Bill Duffy. The agreement included a player option in 2028.

The Lakers announced the extension without disclosing financial terms. In the statement accompanying that announcement, Doncic expressed belief in the organization’s direction.

“I’m really grateful to the Lakers organization, my teammates and the fans for welcoming me and my family with so much support and kindness since day one,” Doncic said. “This is an amazing organization, and I truly believe in what we’re building together. I’m going to keep working as hard as I can to bring another championship to Los Angeles and to make Laker Nation proud.”

The ownership questions extend beyond the player’s contract. As Lakers Daily previously reported, Buss’ five siblings have challenged her effort to prevent the sale of the family trust’s shares.

That dispute concerns the family’s remaining stake and Jeanie’s continuing role. The siblings’ opposition represents their position in the litigation, not a court ruling that settles the disagreement.
