Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James took time on Sunday to offer some positive remarks to the students of his I Promise School in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.
“My I Promise School students,” James began. “I know it’s been a tough few weeks. I look forward to the day we can get you guys back into the classroom safely. Can’t wait to see the pictures from your teachers at the I Promise School parade next week. Have a great and a safe summer.”
Shortly after joining the Lakers in 2018, James opened the school to help at-risk students in Akron’s inner city, where he had grown up.
James’ philanthropy and financial assistance from other backers is helping to slowly grow the school from its original scope of instructing third and fourth graders to eventually grades one through eight by 2022.
In addition to providing a safe learning environment, the school is also offering other services to help the students. All graduating students will receive full-tuition scholarships to the University of Akron.
James is currently working out to prepare for the expected return of NBA play, though nothing official has yet been announced. All teams have been off the court after the league suspended play on March 11.
