‘South Park’ Mocks LeBron James for Controversial Stance on China

“South Park” took a shot at LeBron James in the latest episode of the beloved animated series.

In the episode titled “Let Them Eat Goo,” one of the series’ primary characters, Cartman, did not appreciate the fact that South Park Elementary’s lunches were replaced with healthier meals.

“We all talk about freedom of speech,” Cartman said. “Yes, we do have freedom of speech, but at times there are ramifications for the negative that can happen when you are not thinking about others and only thinking about yourself.”

Those words were taken directly from James’ comments in response to Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey’s tweet supporting Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters.

After James seemingly took aim at Morey, many fans and members of the media denounced the Los Angeles Lakers star.

Known to many as an athlete who has spoken up against social injustices, James appeared to take China’s side in the conflict. The All-Star forward tried to clarify his statements via Twitter soon after, but it did little to calm those who were angered by his initial words.

A week ago, “South Park” creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker issued a mock apology to China’s government.

“Like the NBA, we welcome the Chinese censors into our homes and into our hearts,” they said. “We too love money more than freedom and democracy.”

The show has been censored in China for its criticism of the government.
