While Los Angeles Lakers star big man Anthony Davis could technically sign elsewhere when his current deal expires, a new report indicates that those within the know expect Davis to remain in L.A.
Kyle Goon of OCRegister.com detailed the general consensus regarding Davis’ future.
“Keeping Anthony Davis – By any measure, this is the top priority of the summer given what the Lakers had to give up to get him,” he wrote. “Most in league circles believe that work is largely done – that L.A. is where Davis wanted to be, LeBron James is the teammate he wanted to have, and that the Lakers have done enough to sell him on a future with the franchise. Again last week, Pelinka mentioned Davis and James in a “partnership” with the front office, and since last July, Pelinka has reportedly sought Davis’ opinion in important decisions.”
When the Lakers traded the vast majority of their young core to the New Orleans Pelicans last summer, the assumption was that Davis would ultimately sign a multi-year deal with the Lakers.
However, there have been some comments during the 2019-20 season that have brought that perceived certainty into question. Still, it looks like the original plan is currently in place and that Davis will be a mainstay in the Purple and Gold for many years to come.
In his first season with the Lakers, Davis is averaging 26.7 points, 9.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. He’s played a huge role in bringing the Lakers back to prominence in the NBA this season.
Prior to the stoppage of play last month, the Lakers had a five-and-a-half game lead in the Western Conference. Hopefully, they are able to turn that lead into valuable home-court advantage if the playoffs do ultimately take place.
