The buzz surrounding Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James was seemingly at its loudest this offseason after his camp made some comments to ESPN that raised questions about a potential move elsewhere.
Those comments were made around the same time James exercised his player option with the Lakers for the 2025-26 season, creating a bizarre situation where his immediate future was a topic of conversation even while he was under contract with L.A.
But as of now, there are no signs of an imminent divorce between James and the Lakers, a sentiment echoed by NBA insider Zach Lowe during a recent podcast appearance.
“LeBron’s on the Lakers,” Lowe said. “I’ve heard it’s kind of gotten quiet now after it was the talk of Summer League. There doesn’t seem to be like a clean solution either way. Everyone’s saying we should expect them to be on the Lakers. That’s my expectation. But I agree with you. Like on paper there’s a [Miami] Heat trade that is not crazy for either team.”
There are a lot of scenarios on the table for James, and one factor complicating everything is that it’s unclear whether or not the 2025-26 season will be his final year in the NBA.
James could spend the entire 2025-26 season with the Lakers and then retire. He could also try to force his way somewhere else before or during the upcoming season to wrap up his career with a different team before retiring in the offseason.
Or, he could choose to extend his career beyond this coming season, which would open up all sorts of interesting possibilities. Chatter about James leaving the Lakers would likely become even louder in that case, as he’s currently set to hit free agency in the 2026 offseason. Perhaps he will spend this coming season with L.A. and then move on elsewhere.
There appears to be a belief that James will want to be celebrated during his final season. In order for that to come to fruition, he would need to give some sort of indication that he’s made a decision on retirement. As of now, he hasn’t said that the 2025-26 season will be his last.
The NBA’s all-time leading scorer just had a season in which he averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists per game despite the fact that he turned 40 in December. He remains a top talent in the NBA, so it’s no surprise that he’s still involved in rumors.
But like Lowe indicated, it seems like the buzz has quieted down for the time being.
