With the Los Angeles Lakers coming off of an emotional week dealing with the death of Kobe Bryant, head coach Frank Vogel described LeBron James as a “lion” both on and off the court.

James, a three-time NBA champion and three-time Finals MVP, is no stranger to leading a team under immense pressure, but recent events are testing his leadership in ways that he has likely never experienced before.

He gave an emotional speech in front of a packed crowd at Staples Center on Friday when the team honored Bryant prior to the tipoff of their first game since the Laker legend’s passing.

Though they lost to the Portland Trail Blazers 127-119, the Lakers defeated the Sacramento Kings 129-113 on Saturday. James registered a triple-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists.

Vogel’s declaration of what James means to the team is an apt description of what the 17-year veteran’s presence does to help the Lakers steady the ship in the midst of a difficult time for the franchise.

The tragic passing of one of the Lakers’ most beloved figures has not been easy for the franchise. The game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday was postponed by the league to give the organization time to grieve.
