Source: Luka Doncic expected to sign historic $400M+ deal in 2028 with Lakers

Luka Doncic signed a three-year, $165 million extension with the Los Angeles Lakers on Aug. 2. The five-time All-Star was eligible to sign a four-year, $229 million extension, but Doncic would have been leaving money on the table by doing that.

Doncic’s new deal with the Lakers contains a player option for the 2028-29 season. The former Dallas Mavericks superstar is expected to decline his 2028-29 player option and sign a $400 million-plus deal with Los Angeles in the summer of 2028, a source told Lakers Daily.

A future Hall of Famer, Doncic will become the first player in NBA history to make $80 million per year when he signs that massive new extension in 2028. Unless Doncic suffers a career-threatening injury before the summer of 2028, the Lakers plan to offer him a five-year deal worth more than $400 million, the source said.

Doncic will have a no-trade clause in his next contract with the Lakers, the source added.

Doncic was eligible to sign a five-year, $345 million extension with the Mavericks this offseason, but Dallas general manager Nico Harrison was never going to offer Luka the supermax extension. Harrison would have tried to trade Doncic this offseason had he not been able to strike a deal with the Lakers in February, the source said.

The 2019 Rookie of the Year with the Mavericks, Doncic has replaced LeBron James as the new franchise player in Los Angeles. The 26-year-old point-forward averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists with the Lakers last season and 30.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.8 assists in the 2025 playoffs, where Los Angeles lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round in five games.

Doncic has been very busy this offseason. Not only did he lose weight, but he also helped the Lakers get better. The five-time All-NBA star recruited Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart, the source said.

Doncic enters next season with career averages of 28.6 points, 8.6 rebounds and 8.2 assists with the Mavericks and Lakers. He’s third in NBA history in points per game but is still looking to win his first championship. Doncic reached the NBA Finals in 2024, where the Mavericks lost to the Boston Celtics in five games.
