Rick Fox’s genius idea to Kevin Durant’s proposal to cancel All-Star Weekend

The 2025 NBA All-Star Weekend has now come and gone. It culminated on Sunday with a tournament that featured three games and four teams, and Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry earned MVP honors for Team Shaq.

But after some NBA fans had complaints about how the weekend panned out, Phoenix Suns scoring machine Kevin Durant proposed that it should be canceled as that would give the star players an opportunity for some respite as well.

Former Los Angeles Lakers role player Rick Fox responded to Durant’s proposal on X in a rational manner and threw out the idea that the NBA should wait until the end of the campaign to hold All-Star festivities.

“I hear what you are laying down @KDTrey5 ~ ever year its the same conversation ~ a break for the players is definitely needed and that break should 1000% include OUR ALL STARS we need them healthy for the playoffs ~ how about moving the All Star Festivities to the end of the season,” the post on X from Fox read. “Could that work? @NBA”

The storied Lakers franchise wasn’t heavily represented at All-Star Weekend. Not a single Laker participated in the 3-Point Contest or the Slam Dunk Contest, and forward LeBron James was selected as an All-Star but didn’t play in the tournament at Chase Center thanks to foot and ankle issues.

Durant was a member of Team Shaq along with some other of the more recognizable veteran stars in the league today, such as Milwaukee Bucks guard Damian Lillard, Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving and Los Angeles Clippers guard James Harden.

The 36-year-old has 15 All-Star nods under his belt and has won two All-Star MVPs over the course of his lengthy pro career.

Durant is seemingly someone who would benefit from a break from play as a result of canceling All-Star Weekend as much as anyone in the league. After all, he’s one of the older players in the league and has been a consistent presence at the All-Star Game year after year now.

After another iteration of All-Star Weekend has drawn mixed reviews, perhaps the NBA will change up the format or date of the festivities or even cancel them entirely as Durant suggested.

Durant will have an opportunity to play in his first game since All-Star Weekend when his Suns take on the San Antonio Spurs on Feb. 20. The Spurs are winners of just three of their last 10 games and picked up a loss in their final game before the break.
