Report: Some teams are ‘mulling over’ signing former Lakers guard Quincy Olivari

The Los Angeles Lakers decided to waive guard Quincy Olivari earlier in the month after he played in two games for the team in the 2024-25 regular season and put together some memorable preseason showings.

He played his last game with the Lakers before getting waived when the team took on the San Antonio Spurs back on Jan. 13. Olivari logged just over two minutes of playing time in that contest and ended up with zero points while missing both of his shots from the floor.

But according to Brandon Robinson, Olivari might land with another NBA team in the near future. Allegedly, there are teams that are “mulling over” signing the former Xavier University standout.

“Since being waived by the Lakers, there are some teams mulling over the idea of signing the guard,” Robinson wrote. “I’m hearing that he has a few workouts planned. While we wait on next steps in his playing career, his journey into the NBA is fascinating. Olivari became endearing to the Lakers fan base and the organization rather quickly. Olivari joined the Lakers for the 2024 NBA Summer League and then they signed him on an exhibit-10 contract.”

Olivari had standout showings in two of the Lakers’ four preseason games that he suited up in. First off, he torched the Milwaukee Bucks in limited minutes off the bench on Oct. 10. He wasn’t even on the court for the Lakers for 10 minutes, yet he scored 11 points and knocked down all but one of his four 3-pointers.

Fast forward just over one week later, and he got a lot playing time against the Golden State Warriors on Oct. 18 and made the most of it. Though the Lakers lost that game in convincing fashion, Olivari totaled 22 points, seven rebounds and a pair of assists. The young guard also shot 8-of-16 from the floor and 5-of-9 from 3-point range.

Olivari is quite the capable 3-point shooter, and arguably no team is in bigger need of additional 3-point threats than the Orlando Magic. The Magic rank last in the NBA in both 3-pointers made per contest and 3-point percentage.

Orlando has struggled to win games lately as well, as the team has lost all but three of its past 10 contests and is riding a three-game losing streak.

Whether it’s with the Magic or another squad, Olivari deserves to get a shot to prove himself with an NBA team after the promise that he showed when Los Angeles called his number during preseason. Here’s hoping that he will play for his second NBA team sooner rather than later.
