While there are several All-Stars on the Los Angeles Lakers’ wishlist, none compare to New Orleans Pelicans superstar big man Anthony Davis.
Unfortunately for Lakers fans everywhere, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst recently reported that the Pelicans are not interested in trading Davis and are instead looking to surround him with talent in New Orleans.
“The Pelicans aren’t interested in trading Davis and instead have been engaged in trade talks to try to improve their team around him,” Windhorst wrote. “They are currently in 12th in the standings but, as is the nature of the Western Conference, they are just three games out of fourth place.”
The Lakers’ interest in Davis was thrust back into the spotlight after LeBron James remarked on the possibility of the 6-foot-10 star heading to L.A.
“That would be amazing,” James told ESPN following the Lakers’ 115-110 loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday night. “That would be amazing, like, duh. That would be incredible.”
Windhorst continued to explain that if Davis shares James sentiment and wants to join him in Los Angeles, he would be wise to push for a trade this season, before the Boston Celtics can get into the mix.
The Celtics possess a treasure trove of future first-round picks and existing talent on their roster, but cannot yet add Davis because teams are forbidden from trading for two designated players at the same time.
The current designated player they have on their roster is Kyrie Irving. The Celtics will be able to offer a deal for Davis once Irving’s current contract expires in July.
While the clock may be ticking on Davis’ time in New Orleans, this report seems to splash quite a bit of cold water on those hoping to see him in the Purple and Gold.
Davis may end up in Los Angeles eventually, but it’s quite possible that it will not be anytime soon.
