Report: NBA Wants to Have ‘Champion Crowned by Labor Day Weekend’

With the 2019-20 NBA season currently in flux, there are some questions about whether or not a champion will be crowned at all.

The possibility of the season being cancelled is especially troubling for the Los Angeles Lakers. Prior to the stoppage of play last month, the Lakers seemed to be cementing themselves as true title favorites.

Luckily, a new report indicates that the NBA is angling to get a champion crowned by early September.

“I’ve been told Labor Day weekend,” ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported. “They would like to have a champion crowned by Labor Day weekend.”

One interesting factor to take note regarding the timeline Wojnarowski presented is that a championship being crowned on Labor Day weekend would surely push back the start of the 2020-21 season.

The 2020-21 season was originally slated to start off sometime in late October. If the season were to extend into early September, there would likely have to be several months of offseason before the league could start back up again.

The coronavirus pandemic has tested nearly every aspect of modern society, and professional sports are no different.

While it would be quite strange to see an NBA champion crowned in early September, it would be a far better option than the league abandoning the season altogether.

Hopefully, when a champion is ultimately crowned, it will be the Lakers standing atop the mantle.
