According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN, Dwight Howard’s non-guaranteed $2.56 million contract will become fully guaranteed on Tuesday.
The center had requested a non-guaranteed contract from the Los Angeles Lakers to prove his worth, and he has done that and more. Serving as the defensive anchor of the second unit, Howard is averaging 7.1 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game.
The Lakers have until 2 p.m. PT on Tuesday to waive or guarantee Howard’s contract.
“You got to be able to stand the rain,” Howard said. “That’s what makes us humans. That’s what makes us. The ability to go through tough times and not allow it to break our character. It’s hard to do. It’s hard to go through hell and be like, ‘OK, just smile it off.’ But you never know how close you are to a breakthrough if you just quit on yourself.”
Howard’s redemption season continued in Sunday’s 106-99 win against the Detroit Pistons, as he recorded 11 points, nine rebounds and a whopping five blocked shots.
Howard and the Lakers get the New York Knicks next on Tuesday.
