Los Angeles Lakers coach Frank Vogel is excited about Kyle Kuzma’s potential, though he acknowledges that Kuzma’s continued development is often hindered by having to play behind the duo of LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
Kuzma, who turns 25 next week, is in his third season with the Lakers and has switched from last year’s status as a starter into a key reserve for the team.
That change has resulted in Kuzma’s statistical numbers taking a dip during the 2019-20 season, with averages of 12.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game all down from last season.
The addition of Davis to the Lakers’ lineup is the reason why Kuzma has started only seven of the 54 games that he’s played in this season.
However, given the positive change in the Lakers’ fortunes this season, any qualms Kuzma has about his role are likely minimal.
That’s because last year, the Lakers missed the postseason for the sixth season in a row. While this year, they currently have the best record in the Western Conference with a 49-14 record.
With the 2019-20 season set to resume later this month, the Lakers’ success puts them in an excellent position to challenge for their first NBA title in a decade.
Right now, Kuzma is more focused on being part of a championship squad, with plenty of time still remaining to make his mark within the NBA.
