The Los Angeles Lakers have enjoyed three easy wins since Anthony Davis went down with a bone bruise, and that success is actually playing a role in his extended absence from the court.
On Wednesday, it was reported that Davis would miss Wednesday’s game versus the Orlando Magic.
If the Lakers were struggling without Davis, it seems possible that he could have returned. In fact, he recently said that the team’s success in his absence has allowed him to take his time recovering from the scary spill he suffered against the New York Knicks.
“The last three games, it looks like they don’t need me. So kind of taking it slower than usual,” said Davis.
This is the exact kind of news Lakers fans should want to hear. The Lakers’ ability to win without their leading scorer on the season is a clear indication that they are true title contenders.
One of the prime reasons for the Lakers’ success has been Kyle Kuzma. Kuzma has struggled throughout this season and has dealt with a number of injuries himself.
However, he has been on an absolute tear since entering the starting lineup in Davis’ place. He’s averaging 24.3 points and 5.3 boards per game over the last three games.
Other key contributors have been Rajon Rondo, who put up 21 points and 12 rebounds in L.A.’s win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, and Dwight Howard, who recorded 21 points and 15 rebounds in the Lakers’ win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Of course, LeBron James has been a key contributor as well, though that shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone.
If the Lakers manage to get a win on Wednesday night, it will push their current winning streak to 10.
