Former Los Angeles Lakers big man Pau Gasol is credited with helping bring two titles to L.A., and as a result, has a pretty good chance of one day seeing his No. 16 jersey retired by the storied franchise.
In a recent interview with ClutchPoints, Gasol relayed how honored he would be to see his jersey retired in the purple and gold.
“It will be an honor if it does happen,” Gasol said of his potential jersey retirement. “It would be a privilege to be in that group. It means a lot to me that the fans would like to see that. It will be beyond my dreams to be able to experience that.”
Gasol spent the brunt of his prime in Los Angeles after he was traded to the team during the 2007-08 season.
While Gasol took some time to acclimate to the pressures of playing in L.A. and teaming up with Lakers legend Kobe Bryant, he ultimately managed to display the excellence that was expected of him.
Perhaps his greatest performance in a Lakers jersey came on game’s biggest stage, in Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals.
In a defensive battle against the hated Boston Celtics, Gasol managed to dominate both ends of the court and finished the game with 19 points, 18 rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
While Gasol is far from a Lakers lifer, he is certainly beloved by fans everywhere.
Surely that and the two titles he helped win will go a long way in convincing those in control to one day retire the No. 16 jersey.
