NBA exec drops truth bomb on Giannis-Lakers chatter

While the Los Angeles Lakers have a lot of decisions to make in the offseason as they look to upgrade their roster, one Western Conference executive believes that Giannis Antetokounmpo doesn’t make much sense for L.A.’s current timeline.

Antetokounmpo is a potential trade candidate this offseason, as he’s entering the final season of his contract before he can opt out (he has a player option for the 2027-28 season). It’s possible the Bucks will move on from the two-time MVP after failing to reach the play-in tournament in the East in the 2025-26 season.

Some chatter has connected the Lakers to Antetokounmpo, but the aforementioned executive sees a problem with the idea.

“Luka Doncic is 27, he just turned 27,” the executive said, according to Heavy.com’s Sean Deveney. “Austin Reaves is 27. That’s what they’re looking for, guy in their early prime who can grow alongside those two. You get the sense they’re tired of constantly cycling the roster and they’re looking for the right role players to emphasize those guys. That’s not Giannis, who is in his early 30s (he turns 32 in December) and just is not on that timeline.”

Even though Antetokounmpo is older than Doncic and Reaves, he could still accelerate the Lakers’ chances of winning a title in the near future. A two-time MVP and one-time Finals MVP, Antetokounmpo is one of the best players in the NBA when healthy, and he would be an intriguing running mate for Doncic because of his elite finishing ability.

However, it appears that this executive expects the Lakers to go in a different direction when building their roster in the offseason.

In the 2025-26 season, Antetokounmpo played in just 36 games due to various injuries. He still put up some strong numbers, averaging 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game while shooting 62.4 percent from the field. Unfortunately for the Bucks, they didn’t come close to contending.

The Lakers have a ton of players that could become unrestricted free agents in the offseason, which should give them a chance to remodel the team around Doncic.

Austin Reaves (player option), Marcus Smart (player option), Deandre Ayton (player option), Rui Hachimura, LeBron James, Jaxson Hayes and Luke Kennard could all be unrestricted free agents this offseason, and Rob Pelinka and company have to decide which players they believe are long-term fits around Doncic.

There’s a chance that some of those players return to the Lakers, but Los Angeles doesn’t have a young star in his prime (outside of Reaves) to really pair with Doncic. That means the Lakers will need to explore free agency or the trade market to bring that player in during the offseason.

Even though some NBA players think Antetokounmpo will end up in Los Angeles this offseason, the Lakers will likely explore various possibilities for their roster.
