Several Los Angeles Lakers players showed their support for Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns whose mother had passed away on Monday.
Jacqueline Towns died due to complications as a result of COVID-19.
Sending their condolences to the Towns family on Twitter were guards Alex Caruso and Danny Green, forward Jared Dudley and center JaVale McGee. McGee also implored his followers not to take the novel coronavirus lightly.
“The Towns family is heartbroken by the untimely passing of Jacqueline Towns due complications as a result of COVID-19,” said a Towns family spokesperson in a statement.
The younger Towns had posted an emotional video nearly three weeks ago, sharing candidly to everyone that his mother had acquired the virus and was in a medically induced coma because of it.
The Lakers know not to take the virus casually after some of them tested positive for COVID-19 a few weeks ago. Their heartfelt messages reflect the current mood of the NBA family as it mourns alongside the younger Towns and his loved ones.
Last month, the league shockingly decided to suspend operations soon after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert became the first NBA player to have the disease. Other players also tested positive for the disease later.
