New Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic is getting settled in after being traded to L.A. from the Dallas Mavericks, and it sounds like his new teammate LeBron James has taken steps to make him and his family feel welcome.
Doncic said earlier this month that James called him right away after he was traded to the Lakers.
February has certainly been a stunning month for the Doncic family. The Mavs shocked the NBA world by trading the guard after he helped them reach the NBA Finals last season. Some fans expected Doncic to spend his entire NBA career with Dallas.
The Mavs evidently had other plans, sending Doncic to L.A. in a deal that cost the Lakers a star of their own in Anthony Davis. Draft capital and other players were also involved in what was a three-team trade overall.
Doncic made his debut with the Lakers earlier this week, and while he wasn’t spectacular, he helped the Purple and Gold to a win. Los Angeles is now 32-19 on the season, good enough for the No. 4 spot in the Western Conference.
James and Doncic will be L.A.’s new dynamic duo for at least this season and possibly beyond. James’ future is always a topic of conversation at this stage of his career, but it’s possible that he’ll be back with the Lakers next season.
What’s more certain is that Doncic will be the face of the franchise for years to come. The soon-to-be 26-year-old is already a five-time All-Star and five-time All-NBA selectee who is a perennial MVP candidate. Last season, he won the NBA scoring title by averaging 33.9 points per game.
If the Lakers get that type of production from Doncic as they move forward as a franchise, they should have no problem building winning teams for a long time.
As far as this season is concerned, the Lakers will look to maximize the talent on their roster and make a run in the playoffs despite having some major frontcourt question marks following the failed Mark Williams trade.
