Dallas Mavericks forward Luka Doncic is currently second behind Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James in fan voting for next month’s NBA All-Star Game, though he’s realistic about catching the 17-year veteran, who’s having another outstanding season.

“It’s different,” said Doncic on potentially being an All-Star captain. “It would be something special, for sure. I just don’t think it’s going happen because it’s LeBron, but it would be something special.”

On Thursday, the latest update was given on fan voting in both conferences, with James currently leading Doncic by 149,564 votes. James has racked up 4,747,887 votes, compared to Doncic’s 4,598,323 votes, with voting ending on Monday.

Both players are certainly worthy of the honor of team captain, having put up stellar numbers for their respective teams.

The 35-year-old James has shown no signs of slowing up and is currently averaging 25.4 points, 10.9 assists, 7.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game.

The 20-year-old Doncic is in just his second year, averaging 28.9 points, 9.7 rebounds, 9.0 assists and 1.1 steals per contest.

Both players lived up to their statuses when they entered the league, with James being the top overall pick in 2003 and Doncic being selected third overall in the 2018 draft.

From a team perspective, both James and Doncic have have been integral to their team’s success, with James’ Lakers taking a 33-8 record into Saturday night’s game in Houston.

Doncic’s Mavericks aren’t that far behind at 27-15, with their next game set for Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Clippers.

As far as the All-Star Game, that will take place in Chicago on Feb. 16.
