Report: Dion Waiters Has to ‘Convince’ LeBron James and Lakers That He Should Be Signed

On Sunday, the Lakers officially signed forward Markieff Morris after he cleared waivers. But they may not be done tinkering with their roster.

According to Brian Windhorst of ESPN, they’re considering adding guard Dion Waiters.

“I don’t know if Dion Waiters is an answer,” Windhorst said on The Hoop Collective podcast. “They’re going to give Dion a look. They had a meeting with him last week. I expect they will have a workout with him in the short-term and see what kind of condition he’s in.

“They’re mulling it over and it’s because they need some sort of perimeter player who can score a little bit.”

Waiters had a rough season with the Miami Heat this year. He was suspended three times for various incidents and only appeared in three games with them. Waiters was ultimately traded earlier this month in a deal that brought Jae Crowder, Andre Iguodala and Solomon Hill to South Florida.

Despite his questionable attitude, no one can deny that Waiters has game. He has the ability to create his own shot off the dribble, an attribute that’s lacking among the Lakers’ current backcourt players.

His 3-point shooting has been up and down through the years, but he has the ability to get hot from downtown and give his team a spark in that department.

Waiters’ attitude and ability to fit in with the team aren’t the only things the Lakers are considering, according to Windhorst.

“Dion doesn’t just have to convince the Lakers,” Windhorst said. “He has to convince LeBron [James].”

Waiters played half a season with James on the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2014-15 season. If James vouches for Waiters, perhaps the former fourth-overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft will soon be donning the Purple and Gold.
