On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Lakers were given a disabled player exception of $1.75 million for center DeMarcus Cousins, who tore his ACL earlier this summer.
This means that the team could sign a veteran role player, and there’s one in particular that some Lakers fans are pining for.
Despite his sterling resume over the years, Carmelo Anthony has become something of a polarizing figure in NBA circles lately. He’ll be a sure-fire Hall of Famer once he’s eligible, but there’s also ample evidence that he has next-to-nothing left in the tank.
Over the past two seasons, Anthony shot a paltry 40.4 percent from the field despite putting up 15.9 points per game with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Houston Rockets.
In early August, reports surfaced that Anthony had reached out to the Lakers and gauged their interest in signing him. Those reports were intriguing since Anthony has been close friends with LeBron James for many years.
Although the former Denver Nuggets and New York Knicks superstar may be able to give the Purple and Gold some offensive pop off the bench, it seems extremely unlikely that he will help them in the one area they may need help with – namely, an additional wing who excels on the defensive end to go along with Danny Green.
