On Sunday, the tragic death of Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant in a helicopter crash rocked the city and sports world to their core.
What makes it even more tragic is that several other people were killed in the crash.
Steve Fryer of the Orange County Register reported that in addition to Bryant and his daughter Gianna, another member of the local sporting community who lost his life was John Altobelli.
He was a baseball coach for Orange Coast College, a community college in Costa Mesa, Calif. His wife Keri and daughter Alyssa also died in the crash.
Altobelli was about to begin his 28th season as head coach of the Orange Coast College Pirates on Tuesday. There’s no word on who his successor will be, or whether the Pirates will start their season as scheduled.
In all, nine people were in the helicopter when it crashed in Calabasas, Calif, just miles outside of the greater Los Angeles area.
