The inability of the Los Angeles Lakers to simply play basketball has led Lakers forward Anthony Davis and his teammates to take steps to remain connected to each other.
Davis spoke on Friday about how he and his teammates are adjusting to the NBA’s suspension of play in the wake of the continuing coronavirus pandemic.
“We’re sending each other highlight tapes because we miss the game,” Davis said. “… Guys are finding a way to work out safely because you know the season isn’t over. We want to make sure we pick up where we left off. We were in a great place.”
Davis, his teammates and everyone connected to the NBA were forced to the sidelines on March 11 after the NBA suspended play in the wake of Utah center Rudy Gobert’s positive diagnosis for coronavirus.
While Davis is making an effort to continue the momentum the Lakers have had all season, he’s not downplaying the seriousness of the public health crisis that’s resulted in a statewide stay-at-home order in California.
Davis spoke with sympathy about the growing number of deaths from the virus and is working to help Staples Center employees find work while the NBA season remains in limbo.
In addition, he’s helping to purchase meals from local restaurants to reduce their financial losses and also feed healthcare workers.
Davis has personal reasons for wanting the crisis to end, since he has family members working in the healthcare field.
Besides remaining engaged with teammates, Davis is also working out daily in order to stay in shape.
There’s no current timeline exactly if or when the NBA season will resume. At the time play was suspended, the Lakers had the best record in the Western Conference at 49-14.
